During Fall Quarter 2018, Academic Technology Solutions became aware that Canvas did not consistently use the preferred name of faculty, instructors, or students. We have now corrected this inconsistency as of March 29, and if you have a preferred name set for yourself, this name will now show up everywhere in Canvas: your profile page, the Gradebook, Discussion posts or comments, etc. For faculty and instructors, this means that the roster in your Canvas course site will now use the same student names as the corresponding roster in Faculty Access, which should help to alleviate confusion.
Note: You can change your preferred name at any time. Students should change their preferred name via the my.UChicago portal, while faculty and staff can change their preferred name by signing into the directory. Please remember that changes to your preferred name in these systems will not affect your name in Workday or other systems that must use your legal name.
