As UChicago transitions to remote teaching for Spring Quarter 2020 (see the Teaching Remotely site for more information), multiple training options are available to help familiarize you with the tools and techniques of effective remote teaching. All training is conducted online via the Zoom web conferencing tool. You do not need a Zoom account to attend a training session.

Training Courses

Introduction to Canvas and Zoom for Remote Teaching: This 1.5-hour workshop will introduce you to the Canvas learning management system and the Zoom web conferencing tool. We will discuss how to use these tools in tandem to create a well-rounded remote learning experience for your students. Registration: https://training.uchicago.edu/course_detail.php?course_id=1929

Introduction to Zoom for Remote Teaching: This 1-hour workshop, which assumes a basic familiarity with Canvas, will introduce you to the Zoom web conferencing tool and the principles of conducting synchronous class sessions via Zoom. Pedagogical Considerations for Remote Teaching: This 1.5-hour workshop will introduce you to general pedagogical principles and considerations for a transition to remote teaching. The session will model several asynchronous and synchronous teaching and learning strategies you can employ. Registration: https://training.uchicago.edu/course_detail.php?course_id=1932

Please note that for all three workshops, you should register at least 24 hours in advance.

Virtual Office Hours

Virtual office hours allow you to drop in and meet with Academic Technology Solutions staff via Zoom to ask any questions you may have about the transition to remote teaching. To see our schedule of virtual office hours, please visit courses.uchicago.edu/workshop-schedule/. Clicking on a session there will take you to its page in the UChicagoEvents calendar, where you will find the Zoom link to join. You do not need to register in advance to attend virtual office hours. (The virtual office hours replace our in-person walk-in hours at the TechBar in the Regenstein Library.)
